We have all bent down to pick something up and next minute you can’t move ! You consider what your life would be like living from the floor, frantically try to remember where your phone is to call for back up whilst just trying to remember to breathe.

Muscle spasms are involuntary muscle contractions that can be caused by a wide range of things including dehydration, nutrient deficiency, muscle tension or overuse, decreased blood flow and some medical conditions.

They are our bodies way of attempting to cope with the demands we place on our muscles when they are taking too much load.

Lower back spasms can occur when you exercise without warming up, are sitting at work with poor posture all day or are under load due to pregnancy or increased weight.

What can we do to help?

1. Hydrate

2. Stretch. To relive it and to prevent it from happening when you’re at work all day

3. Warm-up before exercise to prevent it from happening in the future

4. Use heat creams or heat packs

5. Use magnesium spray or salts

6. See your Myotherapist or Remedial therapist

You can expect a spasm to last anywhere from 3-7 days with the pain reducing each day. As much as your body may not feel like moving, it is important to keep gentle movements daily to aid in recovery.
