29 Feb So You Want To Be A Massage Therapist?
Here at Health Place we LOVE massage therapy!
All of the therapists here at Health Place love what they do for a number of reasons, from the clients to the knowledge they have gained about treating the human body. Here at Health Place we also love how we can combine sports and massage to shape our careers. By getting to work with elite athletes at events such as the ATP Cup or working with the QLD Ballet Dancers to make sure they are always in their best shape, we gain more experience, opportunities and knowledge.
Here is the story from one of our own massage therapists Shani about why she decided to become a massage therapist:
I usually get asked by my new clients about why I decided to become a massage therapist and honestly, it just sort of happened. It was the right time, the right place with the right people. Every time I tell people about my career choice they raise their eyebrows, smile and then end up giving me a run-down of their current injuries.
When I was growing up, I knew that sitting behind a desk wasn’t the right career path for me. I had always found everything about the human body fascinating and decided that I wanted a deeper understanding of the body in movement, recovery and when injured. When I started working in the health industry I had only recently come to Australia from South Africa (and I still have the accent) and had a good friend who was a physiotherapist guide me in the direction of remedial massage. It was then that I decided to enrol in my first course and loved gaining deeper knowledge and understanding about how the body interacts.
As a massage therapist there is always an opportunity to gain more experience and knowledge about the body and the industry. The massage industry can move quickly, with new techniques, products and treatment styles to learn about. I really enjoy this fast pace as I enjoy knowing that I am learning constantly, keeping up to date and therefore able to deliver the best treatments to my clients.
However, the main reason I love being a massage therapist is the people that I get to work with every day and the clients I get to help. There is no better feeling for me than seeing the look of relief on a client’s face after their treatment and knowing you were able to help that person. It is that feeling that makes my day and reinforces my decision to become a massage therapist.
There are many ways you can have a career in massage here in Australia, here is how to get qualified:
- Certificate IV in Massage Therapy
- Diploma in Remedial Massage
- Bachelor of Health Science (Musculoskeletal Therapy or Myotherapy)
Each level you complete requires further study that is more in-depth and allows for training in specialist techniques. Here at Health Place all of our therapists are either Diploma or Bachelor level qualified, making them incredibly experienced to help our clients.
