Time To Ergonomic Up!

 

You can’t “run out” 12 hours of sitting.  You need to put your heads up, heals down and let ergonomics be your friend!

NANCY – A MYOTHERAPISTS STORY

During my 7+ years in the military I worked at a desk. I was in my early 20’s and the world was my oyster. I had never had an issue in my life. I would get into work, kick my shoes under the desk and sit at my dual screen computer in my swivel chair with my foot under one hip like a pigeon. 

Over time with different desk setups, different chairs and different positions my back failed. I was in tremendous pain. I didn’t know that different positions would cause excess weight on the lower back. I didn’t think that such a small thing (which is easy to fix) could cause me so much grief. 

If only I had thought about ergonomics sooner. It would have saved me many physiotherapy, general practitioner appointments, cortisone injections, time and money. 

CONSIDER ERGONOMICS 

Approximately 50% of our workforce are in jobs which involve them sitting for 8-10 hours per day.  If you were to run for 8 hours a day would you consider your shoes, form and nutrition ? The same mindset needs to be used towards desk posture and ergonomics. 

Poor desk posture can lead to reduced oxygen intake, eyestrain, musculoskeletal conditions, muscle tension and decreased mental health state.  DON’T STRESS THOUGH YOU CAN MINIMISE THE EFFECTS!

Some suggestions to improve your ergonomics are to:

  • Place both feet flat on the ground.
  • Set your chair height so your knees are slightly lower than your hips.
  • Set our screen height to your eye level, so you are not looking down.
  • Use one primary computer to avoid neck rotation 
  • Place your mouse within reach to avoid overextending your arm. 
  • Move every 1 hour for at least 10 mins.
