How does acupuncture turn baby from breech position?

Want to bring your baby into this world naturally, but he / she is facing breech presentation? Try Acupuncture!

Acupuncture is most commonly known as the ancient Chinese technique frequently used to heal bodily ailments by placing thread-like needles on strategic points of the body – and this is correct! However, many people are unaware of the diversity and importance of acupuncture in a wide variety of situations. Would you typically associate acupuncture with pregnancy? Because coming to the forefront of complementary medicine is the ability of acupuncture to help in a diversity of pregnancy complications. Read on!

For these reasons, we’ve listed our most favourable tips that’ll assist you in the prevention and minimization of your stress. It’s our opinion that a life lower in stress is a life richer in health and happiness (and that’s important, right?).

1. Work-out.

Exercise is one of the most effective stress relievers due to the associated release of endorphins (the body’s feel-good hormone), so if you only have enough time for one thing, be sure to incorporate a physical routine into your day. 30 minutes is all you’ll need, that’s a very minor chunk of your day!

2. Chat with a friend.

Take a moment to phone a friend. A reassuring voice, or wise piece of advice, will help put everything back into perspective. A little laughter amongst friends will lower stress hormones and also strengthen the immune system by releasing health-enhancing hormones. That’s a double-whammy in the feel-good field!

3. Book a Massage.

A massage treatment will ease body tension, minimize the production of stress hormones, decrease heart rate and lower blood pressure whilst simultaneously increasing the production of endorphins. Massage produces a result of ultimate relaxation that will assist in making chronic or acute stress easier to overcome.

4. Organize yourself.

Prepare yourself to a point where you’ll feel no need to be stressed. Look forward and organize your schedule accordingly, allowing an appropriate amount of time for each aspect of your life. It’s vital that you try to implement a plan that will create a healthy work/life balance.

5. Yoga & Meditation.

A deep breathing/relaxed pose combo will work magically on reducing your stress. Additionally, the associated silence will cause a greater feeling of relaxation and wellbeing.

6. Acupuncture.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stress interrupts the smooth flow of energy throughout the body. Via the insertion of acupuncture needles, theses interruptions will be addressed, and stress symptoms will be alleviated. Furthermore, acupuncture improves circulation of blood throughout the body, which oxygenates the tissues and cycles out cortisol and other waste chemicals.  The calming nature of acupuncture also decreases heart rate, lowers blood pressure and relaxes the muscles.

7. Drink tea.

Specifically green tea! Tea contains Theanine, an amino acid that has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system.

8. Eat dark chocolate.

Research has proven that dark chocolate reduces the stress hormones within the human body. The perfect excuse to hit up the local supermarket for a block of chocolate!

9. Maintain proper nutrition.

Stress levels and nutrition are closely related. Our suggestions; a diet consisting predominantly of fruits and vegetables is always a fantastic rule to follow. Also, if possible, the inclusion of fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids will contribute towards the minimization of stress symptoms.

10. Dance!

Turn on some tunes and get moving! Switch your body off from serious-mode and straight on to dance-mode.  Playing music whilst you dance will positively enhance the brain and the body. As for dancing; has anyone ever not felt amazing whilst doing so? We didn’t think so.
There you have it, the Health Place Top Ten List of ways to get those stress hormones down to a minimal level.

What is breech presentation and how is it usually treated?

The position of an unborn baby with the feet or buttocks downwards is known as breech presentation, and can pose risks for both mother and child if not rectified before birth. The most common advice given by doctors regarding breech presentation – ‘wait and see’. For the mum-to-be though, being told to ‘wait and see’ can be quite frustrating and stressful.

If after the period of observance the baby hasn’t turned, an External Cephalic Version (ECV) is generally recommended. This is where a midwife or doctor turns the baby by manipulating the baby through the mother’s abdomen. ECV has a success rate of 40-70% but is highly dependent on the individual practitioner. It will generally be performed at full term (showing minimal effectiveness prior to this point) – leaving it a bit late for other options! If the baby still doesn’t turn, a caesarean section is then the recommended path and a C-Section like any major surgery involves numerous risks. It is generally agreed that it is preferable to turn the baby to a cephalic (head first) position prior to delivery – this is where Health Place can help!

Acupuncture as an effective option

Our acupuncturists recommend a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment as a safe and effective way to help those wishing to have a natural birth. Moxibustion is the burning of Moxa (the mugwort herb traditionally harvested, dried and stored) to apply heat to particular points on the body, using the medicinal qualities of the herb to move energy. The stimulated point is connected with the uterus through an internal meridian. The heat moves energy through this pathway and stimulates foetal movements, encouraging the baby to turn on its own. It is painless, physically and emotionally non-invasive and is regarded as safe for mother and child (Guittier et al. 2008). Our acupuncturist will also seek to rebalance the qi (energy), blood and organs of the body through traditional acupuncture methods to compliment the moxibustion treatment.

Will this treatment work?

Many women report that they felt the baby begin to kick and move around within a few minutes of treatment, and most within 5 days. While most breech presentations will correct themselves without any acupuncture treatment (approximately 73%), studies have shown that acupuncture and moxibustion significantly improve the odds of correction occurring (approximately 92% corrected with use of the moxibustion and acupuncture treatment) – [AJCM, 2001].

This treatment is safe to try during your period of observance. Health Place acupuncturist, Hui, has had a history of success with this treatment and is passionate about her work in this field.
